Kansas City's Energy Fast Facts

Municipalities and utilities across Kansas and Missouri are studying grid impact and getting ready for electric vehicles through MEC’s Electrify Heartland project.

Kansas City gets over 78% of its electricity from coal while the national average is just under 50% according to the EPA's Power Profiler.

Weatherizing and insulating your home in the Kansas City area will save more on your heating bills than your cooling bills. In the summer, there may only be a 20 degree temperature difference (70-90 degrees Farenheit) between the outside and inside your home, but during the winter there could be a difference of 40 degrees or more.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), local municipalities, and businesses are funding the construction of 31 more alternative fueling stations which will provide biodiesel, ethanol, compressed natural gas, and opportunities to charge all electric vehicles. While the average homeowner may consume 11,000 kWh of electricity a year, the Kansas City Water Services Department consumes over 100 million kWh of energy annually to treat water and wastewater.
